I’ve been with NetApp 15 years now and have helped support the introduction of dozens of new products during that time. One of the best parts of my job is participating throughout the entire product lifecycle,  from exploring advanced technologies during the design phase all the way to helping our field and partners understand how to incorporate new ONTAP®  software features into customer environments to meet business needs.

 

I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been first to market with new features and technologies. Most recently, we’ve led the industry with high-speed connectivity options, bringing flexible technologies such as UTA2 ports that can be set to 16Gb FC or 10GbE, and systems like the AFF A700 that feature both 32Gb FC and 40GbE ports. We’ve also been first to market with high-capacity SSDs for the enterprise—last year with a 15TB SSD and this time with a new 30TB drive.

 

When I step back and take in the features and capabilities of our latest AFF A800 all-flash array, I’m in awe of the performance and technical advances it incorporates. In fact, if you were to start with a blank slate and set out to design an industry-leading high-end all-flash array for 2018 and beyond, you would come up with a system just like the AFF A800. Here are just a few of the highlights:

  • Industry-first end-to-end NVMe/FC host to flash array over 32Gb FC
  • Industry-first 100GbE connectivity
  • 2.5PiB effective capacity* in a 4U chassis with 15.3TB NVMe SSDs (coming soon)
  • 100GbE NetApp® MetroCluster IP for peak performance

Which AFF A800 feature will our customers like best? That’s tough to predict, with all the flexibility that ONTAP delivers. Obviously, the internal NVMe SSDs with their high performance and low latency will speed up any application. Even better, when the AFF A800 is coupled with end-to-end 32Gb NVMe/FC connectivity, our customers will be able to achieve higher performance at lower latencies than ever before. On the other hand, some customers have been waiting for a storage solution with support for 100GbE. And some may decide to enable 100GbE along with 32Gb FC (which NetApp released in 2016) and end up with a system that delivers application bandwidth that’s unmatched in the industry.

 

In other words, the AFF A800 is perfect for SAN-only environments, NAS-only environments, or a combination of both. For more information, check out this short lightboard video.

In 2003, Chris was so happy as a NetApp customer, he decided to join the company as a Technical Marketing Engineer (TME). Starting in 2005 Chris took over TME responsibilities of NetApp’s ONTAP platforms and has helped design and launch dozens of new All Flash FAS (AFF) and FAS platforms since then. Chris has over 25 years of industry experience and prior to NetApp held positions including motherboard chipset design, UNIX system admin work for various financial, high tech and retail companies, designing UNIX servers and underlying infrastructure deployed in ~2000 stores of a major supermarket chain, and a home entertainment start-up.
