“My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who heard that Bob’s OpenStack deployment went off the rails last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.”

With OpenStack’s significant and noticeable rise in popularity lately, it’s no surprise that it isn’t immune to urban legends. Namely, that deploying OpenStack is more complicated than solving a Rubik’s Cube or finding the Higgs boson. Oftentimes there’s a shred of truth behind the rumor, though, and OpenStack deployment is no different. It CAN be complicated, but Fuel, an OpenStack community effort, can help.

The beauty — and pain — around OpenStack is the myriad choices one gets when deploying. There are many ways to customize OpenStack to your specific needs, but alongside that choice comes many ways to inadvertently introduce error into your deployment, causing frustration, lost time, sleepless nights, or at worst, a failed OpenStack project. This is the challenge Fuel solves directly.

Fuel’s description at OpenStack.org says it best:

“Fuel is an open source deployment and management tool for OpenStack. Developed as an OpenStack community effort, it provides an intuitive, GUI-driven experience for deployment and management of OpenStack, related community projects and plug-ins. Fuel brings consumer-grade simplicity to streamline and accelerate the otherwise time-consuming, often complex, and error-prone process of deploying, testing and maintaining various configuration flavors of OpenStack at scale.”

On Wednesday, SolidFire released the first third-party storage plug-in for Mirantis Fuel, allowing Fuel to automatically configure the deployed Mirantis OpenStack instance to use SolidFire.

This is big news for anyone using Mirantis OpenStack and looking to hit the “easy button” on deploying OpenStack and SolidFire’s scale-out, all-flash Cinder block storage. Furthermore, Fuel runs “health checks” on your deployment, identifying problems before they become full-blown, late-night wake-the-whole-house system alert issues.

I recently sat down with Mirantis’ senior product manager for Fuel, Sheena Gregson, for another episode of of the Elements of SolidFire community podcast. Deploying OpenStack doesn’t have to be a “Choose Your Own Adventure” that ends poorly; deploying with Fuel can help ensure your adventure ends in a working cloud, not a nightmare.
