I’ve completed my first quarter here at NetApp SolidFire, and it’s time to test my learning. The biggest test: Is SolidFire as great as we say it is? As a marketer I expect nothing but glowing feedback when I ask a customer how the product is really performing — and with SolidFire I’ve not been disappointed.

So when it came time to get in front of TechTarget to discuss building an infrastructure agile and efficient enough for Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, having one of our customers share their experience was a no-brainer.

Automated HealthCare Solutions (AHCS) and their sister company ezVerify offer a unique architecture and centralized data management capabilities to healthcare providers, allowing them to leverage collective knowledge — worker’s compensation protocols, payment rules, physician relationships, claims processing intelligence, supply chain management, company operations — from one single source rather than multiple, interfaced solutions from third-party vendors. The entire workflow, from patient encounter to delivery of the claim to the payer, is fully automated and driven by AHCS.

As a result of their business model, Ed Dibeler, CIO of AHCS, requires systems that are always available, reliable, and secure. If his SaaS solution was ever unavailable, not only does it cost AHCS money but it also takes time away from patients receiving critical care. “Being a technology shop touting cutting-edge software platforms, we wanted to have cutting-edge infrastructure. SolidFire offered us that,” said Dibeler.

For AHCS, delivering these three features with the support of SolidFire as their infrastructure has been key to success:

  1. Scalability without downtime: Always available, real-time data is a requirement for physicians. AHCS can’t afford maintenance windows from scaling their infrastructure or system upgrades. SolidFire’s ability to scale both capacity and performance without any affect to their production environment has been “flawless,” according to Dibeler.

  2. Data protection and integrity: As with all SaaS companies, data integrity is critical, but for AHCS, data protection is just as important. AHCS heavily uses their hardware, and, as a result, will see a drive fail from time to time. However, with SolidFire’s architecture, a drive failure has no time or performance impact to their architecture. In fact, half of their nodes can fail and still maintain 100% reliability in a SolidFire environment.

  3. QoS (Quality of Service): Being a development shop, AHCS depends on SolidFire QoS to guarantee bandwidth during testing phases of software development that won’t bog down their production environments. This allows AHCS to change performance characteristics as their needs evolve. As a SaaS provider running everything on one array, QoS is key to make sure nothing sees downtime.

Being a provider to the healthcare industry, AHCS has no margin for error. AHCS has put SolidFire to the test, and even under rigorous requirements, Solidfire has passed every test.
