You asked, the NetApp A-Team delivered! At this year’s Virtual Tradeshow, the A-Team and NetApp subject matter experts answered your toughest questions on the industry’s hottest topics. The cloud session was packed to the gills with attendees looking to hear how NetApp cloud solutions can help them transform their businesses.

Here are a few of the questions we received, with answers from NetApp technical experts, including A-Team members Jeremy Goodrum, Dan Barber, and Taylor Riggan, and NetApp Sr. Director of Cloud Product Management, Spencer Sells.

Is it better to back up data locally or in the cloud?

While there is not a simple answer to this question, a good backup/disaster recovery strategy often employs both cloud and onsite resources. Depending on your use case and requirements, you may choose to move certain workloads to the cloud or keep them on premises. Local backups provide quick restore times for use cases like virtual machines and other frequently accessed data, whereas cloud-based backups are usually more suitable for archiving.

A common rule of thumb is “3-2-1”: 3 copies of the data, 2 different media types, 1 offsite backup. In any situation, it is best not to put all your eggs in one basket. For example, you could back up your data to AltaVault, with a local copy on the premises, then back up your data from AltaVault into AWS.

What products does NetApp provide that enable enterprises to use public cloud compute resources with enterprise storage and data management capabilities?

NetApp Private Storage (NPS) is perfect for this. With NPS, you can take advantage of hyperscale compute while maintaining all the enterprise storage features of ONTAP data management software. This is accomplished by using physical NetApp storage in an Equinix data center, giving you direct access to AWS, Azure, and SoftLayer clouds in a secure, private environment.

What is Cloud Control? Can I use it to back up my data to the cloud, on-premises, or both?

Cloud Control is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering specifically for backup and/or archive of your Office 365 data (OneDrive, SharePoint, and Exchange). You can provide your own backup target location or you can allow Cloud Control to manage this for you. If you use your own storage, that storage can be on premises or in the cloud.

What are the advantages of AltaVault vs. ONTAP Cloud? How could you use them together in one solution?

AltaVault and ONTAP Cloud solve different problems and work nicely together. AltaVault allows you to store your data backups into object storage and restore that data back on-premises or back into ONTAP Cloud. ONTAP Cloud is a full ONTAP system in the cloud and provides the enterprise storage and data management capabilities of ONTAP in AWS or Azure.
