Introducing FlexPod SF with Red Hat OpenStack Platform

Building on a long-demonstrated foundation of OpenStack successes, FlexPod SF with Red Hat OpenStack Platform is the first OpenStack solution on FlexPod SF. The design includes components such as NetApp® SolidFire® 9608 nodes, Cisco B-Series M5 blades, third-generation Cisco 6300 Fabric Interconnect, and Cisco 9000 series switches, which are configured together to provide resiliency and high availability.

 

A new core component of this FlexPod design is the NetApp SolidFire scale-out all-flash storage platform, designed to deliver storage performance to thousands of OpenStack workloads running simultaneously. SolidFire enables granular scalability, powerful simplicity, and consolidation with a single storage platform. FlexPod SF with Red Hat OpenStack Platform uses the NetApp SolidFire Cinder driver to more easily provision storage with per-volume quality of service without any day-zero storage management overhead. The Cisco Nexus ML2 plug-in and Cisco UCS Manager Neutron plug-ins enable multitenancy by providing VLAN-based network segregation, allowing for multiple-tenant networks.

 

The central benefit of this FlexPod design is that it is fundamentally easier to deploy when compared to acquiring and configuring disparate storage, compute, and networking. Red Hat OpenStack Platform 10 is a more stable and long-term supported OpenStack distribution from Red Hat. The OpenStack deployment process is completely automated using Red Hat OpenStack Platform Director, which uses templates to configure the OpenStack services in a highly available manner. Using automation, OpenStack block storage (Cinder) services and OpenStack object storage (Swift) services can be deployed and configured on SolidFire. Cisco OpenStack networking (Neutron) plug-ins are also configured.

 

As an element of a next-generation data center strategy, FlexPod SF can offer a predictable cloud infrastructure designed to deliver increased resiliency. FlexPod SF customers can also take advantage of FlexPod cooperative support, which enables the customer to call NetApp, Cisco, or Red Hat, depending on initial problem assessment, helping to simplify and streamline support.
