2018 IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Object-Based Storage (OBS) Vendor Assessment

On June 27, 2018, IDC released the latest version of its MarketScape for object-based storage. In this report, IDC named NetApp a leader. NetApp® StorageGRID® is a software-defined object-based storage solution for unstructured data. As part of the product team at NetApp that builds StorageGRID, I am very proud of the callout as well as the write-up of StorageGRID in the report. Proud, but not surprised. In the last 3 years, we have released significant capabilities in a predictable cadence (two full-feature releases per year) to our rapidly growing installed base. Many of these capabilities are truly industry leading and reflect our belief that object storage is moving into more critical (and massive) use cases in the industry.

Meanwhile, the StorageGRID team has made great progress in releasing industry firsts, for example:

  • True hybrid cloud workflows with Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3). NetApp brings Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud compute to your on-premises object storage through integration with Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS). With StorageGRID CloudMirror functionality, you can bring your on-premises object storage seamlessly to the cloud.
  • Native Elasticsearch integration (on premises or cloud hosted) for massively scalable metadata search and analytics.
  • Delivering industry-leading data lifecycle management while using an industry-standard object API (S3) to protect your compliant data. The StorageGRID compliance option enables you to comply with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) requirements for electronic record keeping.

These are all prime industry-leading capabilities, but the greatest advantage of StorageGRID is that it’s a key thread in the overall NetApp Data Fabric. IDC recognizes the strength of applying StorageGRID capabilities across our broader NetApp portfolio, and specifically praises a few in the report, including integration with NetApp FabricPool technology. FabricPool allows you to easily harness the multiprotocol and data management capabilities of NetApp ONTAP® on the NetApp AFF platform while taking advantage of the extensive scale of StorageGRID for the data that doesn’t require the extreme performance of AFF.

I hope you take the time to download and read the 2018 IDC MarketScape for object-based storage and let us at NetApp know how we can help you solve your toughest unstructured data management problems with StorageGRID.
